Saint Nefsksin Alexander

Alexander Giaroslavitch, known by the nickname given to him after his victory over the Swedes on the river Neva "Nefsksin", is considered one of the most important personalities of Russia, the Governor of the Republic of Novgorod and then of all Russia (Russia was its latter name). At the age of 16 he became Duke of the Republic of Novgorod and he successfully stopped the Swedes from taking over the fortified Ladoga on the river Neva. He was nevertheless sent in a peculiar exile, from which he was brought back to face the invincible Teutonic Knights (1241-1242). Their dragging to the frozen surface of the Lake – Battle of the Ice - signaled the end of their expansive advance. He allied with the Tatars and even became a blood brother with Sartak, the heir of the Grand Batu Khan, who is said to have been baptized Christian. In 1252 he ruled all of Russia. He died gravely ill at the age of 43 during one of his journeys. In 1547, the Russian Church proclaimed him a saint.
