Saint Alexander
Alexander Svirsky or Svir (1448 - 1533) is celebrated as a Saint of Orthodoxy, a monk and abbot of the Russian Orthodox Church. Born to a rural family in the republic of Novgorod, east of Ladoga Lake, he was baptized and named Amos. At the age of 19 he abandoned his family and went to the Monastery of Valaam where he spent most of his life as a monk, with long periods of complete isolation. In 1596, Serapion, the archbishop of Novgorod appointed him as abbot in the Monastery of Trinity which later became known by the name of the Saint. He became known for his virtuous life and contemplation. His memory is celebrated on April 17 or on August 30 by the Eastern Orthodox Church.
