Saint George from Monastery of Xenophon

The Holy Monastery of Xenophon built on the west side of Mount Athos is dedicated to Saint George, while having two main temples (Katholica) dedicated to the two Saints, Saint George and Saint Demetrios. The figure of Saint George dominates in portable icons and frescos. This particular icon portrays Saint George sitting on a throne and not on horseback as it is commonly used, while the dried blood from his face wound, reminds the time when an Iconoclast wounded him with a knife during the Iconoclasm period. According to the tradition, although the icon was thrown to the fire, it was kept intact and the fire was extinguished. The Iconoclasts raged to destroy the icon, tore its surface with a knife and blood sprang out from that spot.
