Saint John Chrysostomos

Behind the skull of Saint John Chrysostomos at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi in Mount Athos, housing the intact left ear of Saint inside a silver embroidered case, is located the icon of the Saint crafted according to the traditional method of Byzantine hagiography. The icon depicts the Saint according to the available historic source: he had big head compared to his very small scrawny body; a long nose and wide nostrils; he had sunken eyes with intense eye sockets, a pale, sad and tormented look; he had big forehead without hair but full of scars and lines; he had thin beard and his cheeks were always sunken, result of the continuous fasting throughout his life.
