Saint Nicolaos from Monastery of Vatopedi

Among the icons of the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi we find the icon of Saint Nicolaos, the Saint that occupies a special place in the hearts of the Christians and is commemorated by many Churches as well as the Orthodox Church. Saint Nicolaos was born at the end of the 3rd century in Lykia. At an early age he was ordained presbyter and since then he devoted his life to his congregation, to the poor, to the sick and to those who asked for his aid, without ever seeking to make known his good natured and miraculous practice. During the Diocletian persecutions (303-311 AD) Saint Nicolaos was imprisoned but never stopped spreading the Christian religion. He was ordained bishop during the reign of Constantine the Great and took part in the struggle against Arianism. He was buried in Myra of Asia Minor and during the first Crusade in 1087 AD his relics were transferred to Bari in Italia. His memory is celebrated on December 6.
