Saint Valerios

In Mesaravia, between Romania and Ukraine, the current Moldova, Valerius Gafenkou was born in 1921. He stood out for his school performance and his polite manners. In the summer of 1940 he enrolled at the Law School. He left from Mesaravia with his family in an attempt to avoid the communist regime which occupied his country but returned soon after with his father to fight against the communistic regime. He was imprisoned however at the age of 20 years old and spent the rest of his life in prison, until his death. During his stay in prison Saint Valerios spoke and acted according to the words of the Gospel, with great love and care for his fellow prison inmates. He died sick and exhausted in prison, after he had reached high levels of spiritual life and had "seen in a vision" Virgin Mary.
