Τhe Assumption
During His last moments on the Cross, Jesus looked after His mother. He instructed Evangelist John to have Her live with him, his brother Jacob and their mother Salomi, a family member of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary lived Her life with sorrow anticipating the moment she would meet her only Son. Three days before her Dormition, Archangel Gabriel communed to her that the time has come to leave Her earthly life. She prayed on the Mount of Olives and returned to John’s house. According to tradition, the Apostles although being in different places spreading the Gospel, came at Her bedside to be present at Her Dormition. Also present were Dionysios Areopagitis, Saint Jerotheos, Apostle Timotheos and many more prelates.
The original of the particular icon of the Dormition is in the Monastery of Stavronikita of Mount Athos, elaborated by Theophanis the Cretan, in 1546 A.D.
