The Crucifixion
The Holy Monastery of Vatopedi is the largest edifice complex of Mount Athos with the Nave being built in the 10th century. Among the Monastery’s frescoes, dated from the 14th century, that depict Christ’s Passion with elaborate and exceptional technique, are the Last Supper, the Pieta, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.
The icon of the Crucifixion depicts part of the fresco that adorns the nave of the Monastery of Vatopedi, shedding light only over the three faces of the drama, Christ the "King of Heaven", the Virgin Mary on the left side of the Cross and John, both of them being bowed and overwhelmed.
