Τhe Extreme Humility

The icon of Extreme Humility depicts together in one single scene the Crucifixion, the Lamentation and the Entombment. In this icon - where in posterior syntheses, at the right and left side of Christ are depicted both the Mother of God mourning and John or only the Mother of God – the substantial humility of Christ is indicated, not only an external or altruistic behavior, but an internal realization of life as an expression of love and communion. Even the Lord’s Resurrection was held by way of humility. The icon is a symbol of Passion, which leads to humility, to death for the sake of the people.

Jesus' last cry symbolizes the completion of his assignment on earth culminating his victory on Earth and his long journey towards His union with the Father. The original icon of the "Extreme Humility" is dated in the 16th century; it is attributed to the Cretan School using wood and egg tempera and is housed in the Monastery of Iviron at Mount Athos.
