The Metamorphosis, Holy Monastery of Stavronikita
As narrated by the Evangelists, in the Metamorphosis, Christ was revealed before three of his disciples who received God’s commandment to obey His Son. According to the Evangelists, Christ went to pray on Mount Thavor taking three of his disciples with Him, Peter, John and Jacob who were tired after the difficult ascent and fell asleep upon their arrival at the top. When they woke up they saw Christ, framed by bright light, his white clothes gleaming in the sunlight. He was talking to two men, Moses and Elias, his two most important prophets. Mystified by the spectacle, the disciples heard God’s voice telling them to obey His beloved Son, the One consigned to save the world.
The icon of the Metamorphosis of Christ decorates the nave of the Holy Monastery of Stavronikita and is the work of Theophanis the Cretan, 1546 A.D.
