It is one of the most familiar depictions of the Virgin Mary. The Cretan painters of the 15th and 16th century, used to reproduce the icon in its most popular version, the one of Emmanuel Lombardos - great painter of post-Byzantine icons - who lived in the second half of the 16th century. The original is exhibited at the Benaki Museum.
