Virgin Mary Kardiotissa
According to the Christian tradition, this icon depicting the Virgin Mary enthroned with Jesus sitting on her knees came from Constantinople, by itself, after the fall of the city by the Turks. Every time the icon was found, it was sent back, but because it did not wish to go back to Constantinople, it took along the pillar with the chain where it was tied, both being preserved till today. The figure of the Virgin Mary was impressed at a rock under the Monastery, where according to tradition, the icon stopped for the first time and a temple was built at the exact location, with the name "Virgin Mary Zoodochos".
The surname Kardiotissa was given to the Virgin Mary because, being the heart of our Church she offers her heart to all those that seek her mercy and her people offer their heart to her. The title of Kera (Lady) is attributed to her for her role of being the Lady of all of us.
The icon of the Virgin Mary Kardiotissa is kept, among hundreds of vows, candles and offerings at the Monastery of Kera Kardiotissa, built at 630 meters height, in the green region of the Lasithi Plateau. The temple of the Monastery is dedicated to the Natal of the Virgin Mary and is commemorated on September 8.
