Virgin Mary Tricherousa - Three-Handed
A family heirloom of Saint John Damascinos - consultant of the Caliph of Syria Oualid (705 - 715 AD), the icon of Virgin Mary Tricherousa - Three-Handed was kept in the chapel of his house. During the period of iconoclasm, the Emperor of Constantinople, Leon III Isavros, an adversary of the icons, defamed Saint John to Oualid who ordered to cut off Saint John’s hand. Later Saint John saw in his sleep the icon of the Virgin Mary he kept in his house, telling him that his hand was healed and that he could continue on his Christian work. When Saint John woke up and realized that his hand was truly healed, he decided to place a silver effigy of his hand under the left part of the Icon of the Virgin Mary. Due to this fact, the icon was named Tricherousa - Three-Handed and is till today the protector of the Serbian Orthodox people.
