Virgin Mary Vrefokratousa - Child Holding
The icon of the Virgin Mary and Child depicts the Mother of God holding baby Jesus to her right side and leaning her head slightly towards Him to symbolize her protection and tenderness. The Mother of God enfolds Her Son with both hands and looks straight ahead with kindness and so is little Jesus. Regarding the garments, the tunicle and the inner gowns have the same harmonic color shades in red and blue.
This icon constitutes a variation of the Virgin Mary Glykofiloussa with more particular iconographic characteristics that place the icon in the 15th century, and technically following the methods used by the early Cretan workshops.
The icon however with the gentle figure of the Mother of God and the "baby" figure of Jesus with soft round features, plump hands, full shoulders and the two small angels located at the left and right top, leads to Lomverdos’ art technique and belongs to this collection of Virgin Mary icons.
